Or what's left of it.....

It was raining really heavily over the last week, put that together with 2 dogs and all I am left with now is mud. It looks terrible, how can I get my grass to grow back? I know nothing about gardening. Is it just a case of putting down some grass seeds?

Help!

  1. growing grass is pretty easy - especially if the ground is already scored up for you...get some grass seed, don't get the cheapest stuff cuz you could get alot of weeds.  Get a good name brand.  The first few days water it good in both the morning and evening - you should see germination in 3-6 days - and keep your dogs off that area until the grass is grown in completely.

  2. You can easily rake the dirt and sprinkle grass seed, then rake back over to give a light covering of soil.  Water daily until the seedlings are a couple inches tall, then water every other day until your 4th mowing.

It's amazingly simple (minus the hard work raking).

  3. Planting seed without working up the soil first is foolhardy. Whether you're seeding an entire lawn, or simply a few bare spots, the seed has to find a logging spot to anchor it in place and offer protection against washing rains and drying sun and wind. As a tiny grass seed germinates, the new plant's only source of nutrients is what has been stored in the seed itself. That's not nearly enough to produce a vigorous grass plant. Some new plants will manage to survive on whatever nutrients they can scrounge from the soil. But to get a thick, vigorous stand of grass, it takes fertilizing at planting time. For best results, use a fertilizer formulated to stimulate early root development in the young seeding...such as Scott's Starter Fertilizer. And good luck.

  4. you will want to rake out anything left from the dead grass to make sure your seeds will take, then spread new grass seed around the damaged areas and cover with straw.  water daily (unless you get more rain) and in about a week, you will see new grass growing.  Do a little research into the grass seed you buy and find some that will do well in your yard; shady, wet, direct sun/partial shade, stuff like that
