Question:

How can I retrieve my cockatiel from her cage with unclipped wings?

I adopted a female cockatiel three days ago. I was told from many people that to let her sit on my finger, it is important that her wings are clipped so that she does not hurt herself. And... that is my problem! I don't want to scare her nor her to bite me. I would love advice on how to put her in a crate so she can be taken to a vet! Thanks =]

  1. Offer her a stick (get a spare clean wooden perch) to step up on or offer her your arm or wrist instead of your finger.  I had a bird that was scared of hands but fine with wrists and arms.

  2. With birds you have to take everything slowly. Do not frighten her.  Get her used to your hands before you put them near her.  When she is used to you hands, teach her to step up (gently push on her lower abdomen).

When she is simply tame like that you can put her in a crate and take her to the Vet.

She doesn't necessarily have to be clipped. Clipping wings is a controversial subject.  If you can provide a safe place for her to fly, then take advantages of the health benefits of a flighted bird. However, if you cannot provide a safe area, clipping might be more beneficial for you and the 'tiel.

  3. Just take her whole cage to the vet, it is easier.  You need to let her get used to you before you start step-up training.  Sit near the cage and read out loud to her so she is used to your voice.  After she is completely comfortable, start offering treats to her near the door of the cage, let her come to you.  When she will eat from your hand, then start having her step up onto your finger.  Give a treat when she does well.  Keep training sessions to 15 mintues, several times a day.

There are more training tips linked on the site in my profile.

  4. Well I think you should take it slowly...

When the bird sees you have food in your hand so it will know that you are friendly.

If it comes out...give it the food.Try holding the bird gently, tight, but not too tight.

    Hope I helped....^_^

  5. if she doesn't know you, you may have better luck getting her out of her cage with a stick or, try the "step up" command.  if she knows it she will step onto your finger.  you can also gently wrap her in a small towel and take her out, then put her into the crate.  trimming flight feathers is very easy though.  you may need one person to hold the bird in the towel so she doesn't hurt herself.  all you do is stretch out the wing and clip the feathers in the middle - not all the way down, just halfway.
