I put my tongue on the roof of my mouth and say r but it sounds really bad and my ears bubble up.

Please don't say practice because I know, and I have been doing that for the last 3 months constantly.

Gives me some tips please.

Thanks

  1. so since you answered my question i will answer yours.

well first of all that is retarded.

second of all you don't have to be rude.

third if you don't have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all.

    okay got it.

    bi-atch.

ha just kidding bout the last word.

    or am i.

  2. Unfortunately, it is a genetic ability. So the likelihood of you learning it, if you've never been able to do it before, are very small.

  3. If you put your tongue on the roof of your mouth,it's an Italian or Persian "r".

You put the back of your tongue on your upper teeth, and the tip of your tongue doesn't touch anything. It will be the American "r".

  4. Don't listen to Steve B, I was told the same thing by some other idiot and I taught myself.  The tip that got me doing it was saying the word "practice" but replacing the "r" with a "d", so your saying "pdactice".

Keep saying it over and over, and each time say it faster and faster.

    It worked for me.......

  5. Don't be discouraged by Steve B.  The only "r" variations I can natively produce are Japanese and English...though I have learned some others pretty well.

If you're putting you're tongue to the roof of you're mouth and then trying to produce an English R, that really won't work, as the sound is not really related to the English "equivalent".

Although the pronunciation of these words vary in different English accents, try saying words like "butter" and "ladder" and pay special attention to the pronunciation of the 't' or 'd'.  Then try saying the words faster.  If you're pronouncing it properly, you're tongue should be near or touching the back side of your upper teeth.  If you hear a resemblance between this and a rolled r, just try exaggerating the sound.
