I have windows XP and I haven't run a check disk before. There have been times when I have had power cuts and I'm a bit concerned about what they may have done to my computer :(

It would be really great if you could help me out.

Thank you :)

  1. GO TO COMPUTER/DRIVEC OR WHATEVER DRIVE U WANT CHECKED .RIGHT CLIK ON DRIVE/PROPERTIES /TOOLS HIT CHECK NOW CHECK MARK BOX ....REBOOT COMP. WILL DO CHECK ON START UP...........

  2. open My Computer - right click the C: Drive - choose properties - choose tools - select error checking check now - select both check boxes - select start.  You may told that it can not gain exclusive access to your disk - and if you want to schedule a scandisk on next boot up - choose yes. Restart your computer.

  3. ok here goes, click on start, then my computer, right click on the drive you wanna disc check and go down to properties, you will see there disc clean up, also it you go along to tools you can error check..good luck,,

while your at it download advanced windows care will get rid of loads of problems,. good luck

  4. You can do this through DOS (also referred to as "c prompt" available through your Start/Accessories menu.

At the prompt type:  chkdsk c:\ (enter)

Make sure you type it exactly like that, DOS is very specific.

That will run for a long while, it's going to check all the sectors of your hard drive and then come up with a summary of it's findings.

What you want to see is that there are "0" (zero) bad sectors.  If there are bad sectors, then you've got a problem with your hard drive and you should take it in to get copied to a new drive before it completely gives out on you.

If it comes back saying the sectors are good then your issue may be related to something else but is not due to your hard drive.  You can use the Device Manager features through Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System/  to test various components to make sure they are working properly.

Note:  When I say the "c" drive I only say that because that is usually the main hard drive.  If your main hard drive is another drive letter, then just switch out the "c" for whatever letter you need.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Click

Start > Run > chkdsk :drive letter.

    example: chkdsk :f

  6. The ScanDisk utility is not available in Windows XP. However, you can use the Error-Checking tool in Windows XP to check the integrity of your hard disk. To check for file system errors and bad sectors on your hard disk, follow these steps:

    1.

Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the local disk that you want to check.

    2.

Click Properties, and then click Tools.

    3.

    Under Error-checking, click Check Now.

    4.

Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

    5.

    Click Start.

  7. A few answers were very cloth, but not cloth enough.

When you want to do a check disk you do it as follows.

Start  --  Run        -        then type

    chkdsk /f     or

    chkdsk /r

You will then see a black dos window    Y/N

click Y  and restart your computer

    check dis will be done.

chkdsk /r  does 5 checks, take longer, but is more effective
