I'm 13 years old, and I have asthma. I made it to state in the 800 meter run and the 100 meter hurdels, but I'm really worried because my asthma has been really bad lately. Help! meet tomorrow! thanks!

  1. I can completely relate to you:) I am a severe asthmatic who hurdles frequently and occasionally runs the 800m. You should seek medication for your asthma outside of using an inhaler. A doctor can recommend what's best for you. I currently use Advair 250 both morning and night, and it has improved my asthmatic conditions immensely. I haven't suffered from an asthma attack in years:)

    Preparation outside practice:

You need to combine strength training with cardio to see optimum results in your performance. Do pushups, crunches, lifts, etc.; you can find variations of such strength exercises online. Variety is beneficial; it will truly challenge your body and take it to limits it has never reached.

    800m on race day:

Everyone paces oneself differently. If you're allowed to cut in right after the gun goes off, make sure you get a good start; don't let anyone elbow you in an attempt to push you back. If anything, elbow others:) Start out at a fast jog, and take it up a notch after the 200 mark. After your first 400, just hang in there; try not to slow down. When you come to your last straightaway, give it all you've got left. There's no one way to run for everybody; each person has his/her strengths and weaknesses. Try not to let yourself get psyched out. One saying I like to run through my head is "Pain is weakness leaving the body". It's a saying by the Marines, and it's great to think about when you're feeling mentally and/or physically exhausted during a race. Good luck!:)

  2. Runnerboy is right. Pick someone a bit higher level or same as you, and tail them. keep steady the first lap, and then speed up the second. the last 100 meters or even the last 50 m (my personal technique), speed up past them and sprint to the end like h***s chasing you, lol.

    good luck! =)

  3. My buddy has asthma and he is the regional, county, and conference 800m chapion so far this year, he could possibly win the state meet next week. I think he did soething bout his asthma so get a doc to check it out. As for training, do lots of fartlecks, 300m horseshoes, 400 repeats, and pyrmids. 300 horseshoes are when u run 300m, walk 100m, run 300 and stop. repeat 5-8 times. Pyrmids at like 200m,400m,800m,1200m,1600m, and back down. Good luck and talk to a doc.

  4. First of all congratulations for making it to state, especially with an affliction like asthma!

Secondly, just make sure to take your asthma medicine when you should, and get your stamina up. Also do not eat anything heavy, and wear Reebok pumps!

  5. Im a 13 year old boy and I just won the 800m track championships yesterday. I run the mile so my endurance is pretty strong when i go into the 800m. My technique is to start strong on the first lap, but not kill myself. Then on the second lap, (if theres a guy trailing me) i stick to that guy and at the last half a lap, thats the time to overcome ur opponent if ur going to. then power in that turn hard and on the last 100m, that finish line should give u an extra kick to sprint. Good Luck!

  6. ok heres wat u do on the 1st lap start off strong but fall back and stay in top 6, then rite wen ur gettin to ur 2nd lap u take off frm the finish line to the next 100 then u stride the backstetch, then u pick it up on the 2nd to last 100, and on the last 100 u sprint ur butt off thts wat i do i get 1:56
