Question:

How can I run component through my receiver that has HDMI output?

I recently purchased the Onkyo HT-SR800 system. It has 1 HDMI output and 2 HDMI inputs, and many component in ports. I've already hooked up my 360 and cable box to the 2 HDMI inputs, but I still have my DVD played to hook up. Since I'm out of HDMI inputs, I hooked the DVD player to the component in slot and ran the audio with optical. I seem to have audio just fine, but I don't have any video. The only video i have running to the tv from the receiver is HDMI. Will the receiver output the video from the DVD throught the HDMI? i'm just wondering if I need to change some setting on my receiver.

  1. go straght component from the output of dvd player to component in on your tv and run audio anolog or keep your audio tied in as it is (red, green, blue) hope this helps.

  2. im not sure but it is possible the hdmi will not output from the component signal. in that case you would have to get another cable and use the component out, or run the cable directly to the tv.

  3. i am almost sure you have a setting on your amp that designates the out put from any unit you hook up.eg. dvd output in your case should be set on opt 1 or 2 etc.

  4. That receiver does not offer HDMI conversion (where it takes an analog signal and converts it to HDMI).

I suspect if you ran component out from the receiver to a component in on the TV, you would see the video signal if you changed the TV input. But as was suggested - just run component straight to the TV.

Or - just use the 360 as your DVD player (sometimes the obvious solution is to get rid of extra box's.)
