Question:

How can I safely cross Aurora Avenue in Seattle?

I´m considering staying in the Westlake area of Seattle and one consideration is how easy it is to get from there to other neighborhoods E.g. I like to be able to walk and run in the Queen Anne Neighborhood. From the map it looks like I have to cross Aurora Avenue to get from West Lake to Queen Anne. It looks like a very busy street. Is there any safe pedestrian crossings over Aurora Avenue? Thanks for helping out.

  1. There is a pedestrian "walkway" that goes above Aurora and over to Queen Anne at Galer Street.  Too, I think you can cross under at Dexter Way (not Dexter Ave) and 6th Ave a little farther to the north.

    HTH!

  2. Aurora is elevated for a long distance as it goes North and up over the bridge at Freemont. You can walk easily under it in several sections of the Westake and Queen Anne neighborhoods.

  3. Depending on where you are coming from in the Westlake area, you can cross over at Denny.  Actually, anywhere east of Denny (it's east, right towards the water?), Aurora goes into the Aurora Tunnel, leading to the viaduct, so you wouldn't have to worry about that.  Denny would be a good option as you have decent sidewalks along there and it runs to the foot of the lower Queen Anne area.  Broad St. and Mercer also cross underneath Aurora so you could easily cross there as well!

  4. There are several locations where a person can cross Aurora avenue though some places require the use of stairs etc. You might want to just use a Metro Bus to make your trip between neighborhoods. Aurora avenue itself even has very good bus service on line #358 which operates frequent service along Aurora into Downtown Seattle on the south end and north to Aurora village in shoreline with many connections possible throughout the line. Good Luck!
