I have a plant up in my kitchen window, and tiny little black flying bugs that look like knats are eating the heck out of it...How can I make them stop? I'm afraid that if I spray bug spray it will kill the plant....

  1. The soil could be spoiled. You could try re-potting the plant in fresh soil after carefully removing all the old soil, but if you could do this outside all the better cuz you want to get as many of those bugs out of the house. And then you can clean and then spray the area where the plant was before you return it, just in case there are any left over bugs or eggs about the area that you don't want to re-infest the plant with.  And maybe mist the plant leaves well before you bring it back into the house.

  2. Try washing the bugs off under tap  sink if able to or take to shower and use nozzle to spray the underside of the leaves. Are you sure they are eating the plant?, fungus gnats usually feed on organic material in soil and like soil that maybe kept too wet. Try letting soil dry a little more before watering next time. Hope that can help.

  3. put a screen up that surrounds your plants

  4. Change the soil, and spray with an insecticidal soap (very harmless insecticide, usually comes organic).  Also buy some little sticky sheets for plants.  Gnats are tough because they live both in the soil (along with their eggs) and then fly around the plant and house.  The insecticidal soap will get the ones living on and around the plant (as well as eating it).  Changing the soil will also get rid of the eggs.

To make sure you get them, you can also buy a granular systemic and mix it in with your new soil.  That should get rid of any remaining eggs.
