I would, instead, use a magnet to remove the iron filings first as it is easier to remove all of the iron from the sand while both are more freely flowing in the salt water solution. I would then filter off the sand and, finally, distill the water away from the salt...

First, filter off the iron filings and sand. Secondly evaporate salt water, condensing distillate to get water, NaCl is left. Sand and iron filings, separate iron filings out with a magnet.
