I want to play setter and when I set, the sets of the volleyball is good, but I cannot set WITHOUT the set looking like a hold. I tend to set deepdish, which means my hands set near my neck. The sets are smooth, but I just cannot figure how to not violate the holding rule.

  1. ur carrying.

like you bring the ball back towards urself then PUSH RIGHT?

thats a carry, to not to do that.

  2. Uhmm...bend down using your knees. put your head up, and get your hand close together to create a window.  bend back up and hit the ball with your hand...wjile closing yuor fingers to guide the ball.

  3. A carry? you don't  want to bring your hands in when the volleyball touches them you just want to push out . A setter must have good soft hands to handle the ball. They can't be afraid of being called on a catch. That is going to happen from time to time by officials that don't understand the game. A setter with great hands can control a game more easily than a hitter or blocker.  Also use your fingertips!

  4. put your hands above your head almost on your forehead.make your fingers in a triangle [ thumb to thumb and pointer finger to pointer finger ] . push your hands straight up and hold them there until the ball is in the air.dont flick your wrists, use your arms to push it up.hope this helps!

  5. The reason it's being called as a carry is because you're setting at your neck.  You need to leave your hands above your forehead and cushion the ball when it comes in.  Many setters with soft hands can get away with catching the ball for a slight second before passing it without getting called because they have correct technique.  Try a setting clinic or get help from your coach.  It really is the fact that you're setting so deep (and you'll always get called if you try to backset).

  6. well to start out correcting. Volleyball does not have "Carries" thats basketball. To get called on a "Lift" isnt because your setting deep dish. Any good referee knows the difference and knows what to look for and how to make the correct call. This is where USAV refs seperate themselves from High School. USAV rule that determines this is:

9.2.2 The ball must be hit, not caught and/or thrown. It can rebound in any direction.

The call is more strict when the level of play is higher, for example..lifts are looser for 12's than they are for 16s
