I have free internet in my apartment, but the only problem is it isn't wireless. Could I simply plug a wireless router into the ethernet port? Or is there something else I need to do?

  1. Wal-Mart.  Linksys WRT54GS - $49.95.  Plug it in.  Plug the cable into the ethernet port in the apartment and the "Internet" jack of the router.  Don't use the CD.

Now just set your computer up to use wireless.  (You'll need a wireless card in a desktop if it doesn't have one - recent laptops have wireless built in.)

If you mean plug a wireless router into the ethernet port of a computer, no.  For wireless, the router gets connected to the ethernet (by wire to a jack in the wall, or to a modem that connects to a jack, either telephone or TV cable, in the wall), not to the computer.

  2. All you need to do is get ahold of a wireless router. I would recommend A Linksys G-Band router due to the ease of use with this piece of equipment. All you need to do is plug the ethernet cable that has the internet going to it into the back of the router where is says Internet. It should be a port set apart from the rest. Now, plug another cable into a free port on the back of the router and plug the other end into your computer. Now, as soon as you have a connection to the router pull up an internet page. In the address bar type in 192.168.1.1 (this is the IP address of the Linksys router). Now, when prompted for the password and login, leave the login blank and enter "admin" in the password field. Now, click on the wireless tab. Change the Wireless Network Mode from Disabled to Mixed, and at the bottom ensure that you enable SSID Broadcast. Then click Save. This will set your router up for wireless.

  3. there is free internet in the walls because the ethernet that comes through there has a source. The source is a specified modem, most likely your tenant has the modem somewhere. You will need to buy a router that is connected to the modem using a Category 5 cable (cat 5), that router is specifically used to transmit wireless through out the apartment, so you will need to set up a password for that router in case you do not want to share your internet with anyone else in the apartment : ), The range of internet depends on how much you are willing to spend on a router they range from 20.00 - 200.00 dollars---mainly the good ones are 50.00 bucks, i recommend LinkSy or something like that : )

  4. Well this pretty easily resolved if you have the right things. Well the free internet there must be coming from a source, more than likely the apartment uses DSL, if it does then you are gonna need a ADSL router or else it could be cable but that is unlikely because because you need a line. I you have the right router your best bet to get wireless on your laptop is to buy a USB adapter that works withthe type of router you have. Plug your router into the wall, plug your adapter into your laptop and that should work. Well i don't know if it would work without an adapter. Otherwise you could simply get a really long ethernet cord plug it into the wall and into your laptop, but thats not wireless. Sorry but I'm not the smartest when it comes to these things.
