  1. Of course you can.  Run the network setup wizard.  Here is how you get there:

    Start

    All Programs

    Accessories

    Communications

    Network Setup Wizard

If they are both on DSL or cable, you choose the option that says the device is connected to a gateway.  It will say something about it relies on another device to connect to the Internet.  The other option will say it connects directly to the Internet.  The other option is really only for dialup because all devices rely on the router to connect to the Internet.

The other thing you must make sure you do in the wizard is enable file and print sharing.  Also, if you have a firewall, make sure you open ports 137 to 139 for file sharing.  To do this, you will have to open up another question and tell us exactly what firewall you are using.

Your firewall must also trust the IP address range of your home network.  Typically, this address range is 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.255.
