Question:

How can I shrink a music file?

I need to shrink a music file (preferably .wav) to 1MB (I hate size requirements) so that I can upload it onto my webpage- do I need special software? I am willing to lose sound quality, but not to cut the length of the clip.

Thanks!

  1. You can use a sound editor to change the format and reduce the size by lowering the quality.

Audacity (www.audacity.com) will do this for you.  I'm not sure if you will make the 1Mb requirement, though.  You will have to experiment a little.

  2. try poikosoft's easy cd-da extractor, it can rip, convert and shrink music files. but if you shrink a music file, it might affect its quality.

  3. Download a software which enables you to encode audio to mp3.

  4. download something off google it won't be hard to find.. just search something like music file shrinker.

  5. you have to do two things. First, search for the program Audacity on the internet. Download and install that. WAV files are raw and uncompressed, so you can't shrink it down to 1MB. You will have to save it as a compressed format, like OGG or MP3. If you are fine with saving it as an OGG, then you just need to open the file in Audacity, and go to File > Save as OGG. If you don't know how to play OGGs, then you should stick with saving as an MP3. For this, you will need to go to Audacity's homepage and follow their instructions for downloading the MP3 codec.
