How can I sing better?

Question

really want to sing good since I want to entertain others and compose my own songs. But my singing is very terrible. I would love to get a tutor or a coach but I just can't. I don't have any chances of joining a school Choir since i've joined Band and I can't join Choir at the same time. I also want to practice but i'm embarrassed to be heard by my parents, and my neighbors. Though when I hear myself sing I think i'm kind of good, but when I record myself, my voice sounds different and is completely awful. I really need help on what can I do. Please help and thanks.

sing louder!! a good voice is a loud voice.

ive found that when you learn a instrument or sing all the songs you like...such as for me i like K-ci and Jojo..i sing there songs all the time.  But you have to cater each song to your own voice...you can;t sing like someone eles cause you unique.  But try to look at some videos on youtube.  theres alot.  theres also some videos by Doc Holliday (coach for Tyrese, backstreet boys, etc) who have a dvd instructional out so that might help you.

check out Melissa Cross.com,shes a vocal teacher,i'm a musician myself,i play drums guitars bass and keyboards,and i'm a vocalist too,i learned alot from the Melissa Cross dvd...vocal progressions,voice control and a whole lot more,ya should check it out..it should help ya out give ya some tips and stuff like that...cheers
