How can I speed up my tonguing on trumpet?

Coming from a high school whose band was not very good, I never had to play a piece that required fast tonguing. I had always been the principal player (first-chair) and have great tone and technique. So inexperience is not the problem.

Now that I am no longer playing in a band, I play in my spare time once in a while, and am currently playing bugle calls, in particular, First Call. This is what they play before at horse races before they begin.

Anyway, the tonguing is quite fast. I know how to double-tongue and triple-tongue, but not that fast. Actually, I can't single-tongue very fast, either. How can I speed up my tonguing?

  1. Pretty much the only thing there is left for you to do is just practice it. Start off slow then speed it up as you feel more comfortable with it. Also if you aren't alread doing so, I suggest taking private lessons. This will help out alot -because you will be getting one-on-one attention, and will help you speed up.

  2. Practice. Practice some more. Take a break and then practice some more! :)
