I have currently a land line from ATT with one socket on the wall. I know that they are 2 wires coming in, so basically they can install second line. Can I split the wires on my self and what kind of socket box I need for that?

Thank you for your time and answer.

  1. I have added extra phones in the house two or three by running the same type of wire that is made for phone, I think Radio Shack and maybe Home Depot will have it, from your existing phone.  There are if I recall about four small color coded wires that you come off of in the receased phone cover plate on the wall.  You will have to fish the wires up through the upper plate into the attic and over to the wall and down through the 2x4 plate that tops the studs in the wall.  This will require you drilling  holes in the top plate from above in the attic ( above the phone receptable and where you intend to install the phone).  Watch out fishing around electrical outlets!  A fish is a tool you can get at the hardware store, its a harden steel flat bar/wire that is coiled and can be inserted into the plate hole and pushed down to the phone receptable, where you can atttach the new phone wire you are going to run through the attic.  It is labor intensive, not really complicated!  Good luck!

  2. If I understand your question - you are trying to get two lines (2 different phone numbers) out of one jack.  Yes this is possible.  And the wiring can be done yourself.

You need to have the phone company install a second line in the "Line 2 position".  Then the easiest way is to purchase a 2 line splitter (radio shack - under $5.00) - NOT a Y adapter and plug one line into each opening.

Or you can replace the jack with a Duplex jack.  This is one face plate with two seperate jacks (it will look like a ac outlet).  You will need to wire the top jack (Line 1 ) with the red and green wires to the red and green of the top jack, and the yellow and black wires of the cable to the red and green of the bottom jack (line 2).  That simple.

  3. i would reccomend have an AT&T Tec come out, the sire are as tiny and brittle as can be and if you mes up you will need to get rewired
