How can I start a local dog walking job?

I want to start a dog walking business in my area, but I have no clue how to start it. I know i could advertise a supermarkets with flyers, but I don't know the specifics of the business. How much money should I charge for the walks? How long should the walks be? Should I pick the dogs up from their owners' houses, even if the owners are not home? Should I inspect the dog before walking it? Should I ask the owner if the dogs walks well or if it's an agressive dog? What would I do in case of emergencies? (dog gets lost, gets in dog fight, etc.) Should I offer any other services, like feeding or playing with the dog? By the way I am 18 years old, if that helps at all. Please be as specific as possible in your answers. Thanks a lot.

  1. Ok first of all congrats on starting your own small business!

    1. How much you should charge depends on how far you're walking the dogs, how long, the size of the dog (if you feel necessary), if the dog is able to walk with other dogs or not (if the dog has to be walked individually I would charge extra), if you have to pick the dog up or if he's getting dropped off to you

    2. I would find two nice walking paths or neighborhoods in your area, one that may take an hour to an hour and a half (or more) and another maybe for only half an hour for older dogs,  younger puppies, or dogs that just may not be able to walk as much.

    3. As for picking the dogs up or not that is something you'd have to discuss with the owners, most dog walkers do go into empty houses and take the dogs out while owner is away or at work. I.E. the need for dog walkers!!!

    4. I would most defiantly meet with the owner and dog first, try to get a feel for the dog and his personality. Ask the owner if the dog behaves well with other dogs, or if the owner even wants the dog to socialize with other animals some people do not. If the owner says "yes my dog is wonderful with every dog!" try it out... take the dog on a test run first... if you notice any odd behavior I would express your concern to the pet parent right away and explain that you cannot take the risk of the dog reacting to another dog. Being that these are not your animals but someone else’s and you will not take any chances!

    5. I would see about getting a small amount of insurance, you don't have to but with dogs just as children you never know what could happen. Things can change in a split second! If something does happen, dog fight, runaway, sudden sickness you want to be covered!

    6. You can decide on your own about the feeding part, but the playing part would be nice... offer an extra half hour of Frisbee or cuddle time... whatever fits the dog... but at an extra cost of course.

    7. I would get in touch with a local vet maybe one you've used with your animals... get a relationship going so they can recommend you if someone asks. I can tell you this right now they are your BEST place for advertising! People are always going to the vet and asking for dog walkers or house sitters. I use to supervise a local overnight animal boarding facility and you wouldn't believe how many people came to us from their vet. Also it's good to get in with a vet ahead of time because if you notice a dog acting odd or they get into a fight, you can feel comfortable rushing to your friendly vet or calling for advice.

    8. I just want to congratulate you on your ambitiousness and goals! This is a wonderful field to go into and is always needed! If you have the "pet" heart as we use to call it... they will love you right away and it will not be a job for you, but a fun thing for you to wake up to every morning! *not only that but you'll have the best exercise ever!* I hope I helped and if I can help any further e-mail me, but address is on my profile! good luck!

  2. You should put your flyers up at vets and dog grooming places,  there you can also talk to possible customers.  Maybe set up a meeting with a local vet, to get ideas for what to do in emergency situations.  Good luck.
