How can I start a thesis statement for this topic?

my assignment says:

Explain how Muagham uses bondage both literally and figuratively in the novel to convey to the readers about the limitations of individual freedom.

I am kinda confused what it is asking but otherwise, what is a good way to start the thesis?

Writing a thesis statement is confusing until you know what you want to write about.  Go ahead and brainstorm your topics.  Let's say you are writing a 3 page paper.  I presume you will have an intro about 1/2 page, topic 1 3/4 page, topic 2  3/4 page and topic 3   3/4 page and a 1/2 page conclusion.  Take your 3 topics and plug it in to this thesis statement that got me through college:  An analysis of the topic1, topic 2, and topic 3 will lead the audience to purpose.  (Instead of analysis, you could use the word discussion, exploration, or any other word you choose.)  Who is your audience?  Scholars?  College students?  Readers?    What is the purpose of the paper?  To have a deeper appreciation for the novel?  So you just fill it in.  Good luck.  Email me if you want.
