Can you use an acrylic tank to start a saltwater aquarium or does it have to be strictly a glass tank?

  1. Acrylic tanks are great for salt water.  The new acrylic tanks are actually very difficult to scratch as well.

Either way, glass or  acrylic doesn't really make much of a difference here.

When starting your tank, mix the salt in a bucket then add to your tank.

  2. acrylic is a good tank to use, just take caution when cleaning it, they scratch really easy (I regret having acrylic and not glass)  but you will want to make sure that you have done all your research first, then make sure you have the proper equipment, there is stuff made just for saltwater like filters and lighting systems and heaters, then once you have done this, you make sure the tank in not on an out side wall and that it is out of direct sunlight.  Now once all that is done, fill the tank up with water, and start to add salt, you will need a hydrometer to measure salinity, but you will want it to be around 1.024, then you have to cycle the tank, once the tank is cycled, you can add fish appropriate for the size tank that you have. That is a sugar coated version, but you will have to do your own research.

  3. I would start by filling the tank up with saltwater.
