I would like to know how I can start making contributions to popular English magazines in India. How can I further know if newspapers invite such submissions. I want to write about inner, psychological and personal experiences and in general fiction or commentaries on life.

  1. Each publication is different. I suggest contacting the editors of the newspapers and magazines you hope to write for. Most editors, while busy, will respond to your inquiries.

I admire your aspirations--I have them too--but just be aware that breaking into journalism is not easy. I don't know what your educational background is, but at least in the United States, a degree in journalism or a related field will help, although is not essential. Be prepared to start small and accept even smaller payment (if any). If you want to start building your credentials, many general circulation newspapers hire "stringers," that is, freelance writers who are not on staff, to cover such things are local school boards or other public bodies. You won't earn more than a pittance, but it's a way to start. Tougher by far is getting a publication to accept articles or essays about your "inner, psychological and personal experiences." Even if you're d**n good and extraordinarily insightful, the market is a tough one to break into. There may be some local free publications that would be willing to give you a shot, but I guarantee you won't get rich. You might also try any number of internet sites that allow you to post articles for free or for a small share of the website's profits. The same is true for fiction; it's an incredibly competitive market and only the cream of the crop even gets a chance to make it into print. Having an agent would help, but even most agents are very selective about whom they will accept as clients. Again, check with editors and look at websites as a means to publish.

I truly encourage you to write, write, write. Be patient. Work hard. Develop your craft. Hone your language skills and your unique voice. And, most of all, have fun. You just need to know that doing what you love requires lots of patience and hard work. You may have to compromise a bit at first and write about things that you may not be terribly thrilled with; but that will help diversify your talents and get you a foothold in the business. I wish you great success in your endeavors.
