How can I stay in Japan longer than 3 months without a student visa?

I'm an American who lived in Japan previously on a student visa while I attended a university for a semester (study abroad program in college). I would like to live in Japan again to master Japanese, but I'm not sure how to get a visa to stay longer than 3 months.

I would like to attend a Japanese language school, but I'm afraid that I may be unable to get a student visa. I hear that it's difficult to get a visa after age 25 (as the government becomes suspicious as to why you want to study Japanese at such a late age) and I will be 25 in September. Also, I do not have a guarantor and am not financially able to be a guarantor unto myself.

I also am not interested in teaching English as I've met several people who've taught English in Japan and were unable to learn/practice Japanese. However, I would consider teaching as a last resort.

Are there any other options available to someone with advanced Japanese skills who would like to study and live in Japan longer than 3 months?
