Question:

How can I still have fun on my cruise with an injury?

I leave for a cruise in two days. I've been looking forward to it FOREVER but I got kicked by a horse last week ughh. I signed up to parasail, hike, horseback ride, etc. and I'm not sure I can do anything. We specifically chose this ship because it has surfing, ice skating, and rock climbing but I have stitches in my knee so I don't think I'll be able to do them. Also can't swim.

Doctor says to "see how I feel" for hiking, but it isn't looking too good.

What can I do instead? Will I still have fun?

  1. It's going to depend on what type of injury you have.  You said you've got stitches - so is it just some bruising and abrasions?  Or did you break something?  If your doctor has pretty much given you a medical thumbs up " see how you feel" is leaving the decision up to you - then I say eat some Tylenol and have some fun.  Use a painkiller that is also an anti-inflammatory.  If the knee is unstable, pick up a brace for extra stability.  They have class I - class IV.  Go with a class II or III - they will give you good support without being to obstructive.  You may want to ice it after a day of adventure, but if you are careful, and do all the stuff I just listed, you shouldn't have any problems:)  Relax and have fun!

  2. Darn, that is too bad, but you will find tons of things to do. Don't cancel the horse back riding yet as who knows, you may be able to do that. I would cancel the parasail since you can't get wet. How about a zip line tour? Also there are many tours that don't require a lot of walking. Don't worry, you will have tons of fun, but stay safe till then.

  3. When did this happen?  I got stitches just the other day and it took one week until they came out.  If your one week will be up during your cruise, get a note from your doctor.  The shipboard doc should be able to remove the stitches for you and after that day you can swim, parasail, etc.

You should still be able to do lots of things though.  Your knee will hurt and probably surfing (when you are pushing up fast) and ice skating (which has good odds of landing on your knee) are out but the other activities should be fine.  You can lay out by the pool, go to all the activities on the ship, shop, enjoy fabulous dinners.  I would do a lesser hike though.  If that one is super long or highly athletic I'd probably drop it for a less adventurous hike.

But they come out in a week so you probably will only have restrictions the first couple days of your cruise (unless its just a 3 day cruise).

  4. You can go to the shows, shop, eat, get in the hot tub, relax, eat again ,shore escursions.

  5. You will still enjoy it. There is so much to do on a ship that don't require any physical activity persay. I would just hit up the CASINO!!! Enjoy your cruise!!
