My daughter now has a guinea pig and a Hamster in the house. My cat of 5 years has started peeing through out the house. What can I do to stop this. I have tried changing kitty litter and making a closed litter box an open one. I also keep an eye on him . When I see him peeing, I take him to his box and praise him for using it. He is still peeing. Is there anything else I can try?

  1. sometimes this means the cat has urinary tract problems, get a vet check he may have an infection. They cannot hold on and just go wherever they want.

If he has a clean bill of health then lock him in with his litter box and keep all the other doors shut until he learns. Clean his urine spots with a enzyme based cleaner (no ammonia) to remove the smell.

  2. by making it a wall covering

  3. You say your daughter NOW has a guinea pig and hamster in the house? So I will assume these are new pets to the household.  Therefore I would say the reason for this is because your cat is 'jealous' of the new pets.  He is probably marking his territory just to let the other animals know, another reason cats can suddenly start peeing is if they are stressed.  Maybe try playing with him a little, when he pees make sure you completely clean up the mess he left, as animals have an extremely hightened sense of smell, so if he can smell where he pee'd before he may well do it again. Remember that the pee can soak right through to the wood underneath so you may have to take up the carpet.

    To Clean:

Blot:  Use an old, thick, bath towel and blot up as much liquid as you can with it. Continue with paper towels until no moisture is seen.

Dilute and Blot Again:  Heavily spray the area with clear water or a mild solution of white vinegar and water, then blot again, as above.

Neutralize:  If the odor still exists after the carpet is completely dry, it's time to break out the big guns: odor removers, based on chemicals, enzymes or bacteria/enzymes, all designed to neutralize the odor by eating up the bacteria causing it.

  4. My cat would routinely urinate on the kitchen/bathroom rug, usually seems like when he got upset... i changed brand of cat litter and box location, and sprayed a natural avoidance stuff (clove oil or something in it) on those rugs and he hasn't done it again since.  Its been many months since he has done this. you might want to consider those options.

  5. OMG  PLEASE do not do anything like taking him outside and shouting at him.  This is ludicrous.

Cats like routine and are very sensitive to their surroundings.  They do not like change.

Bringing  in the Guinea pig and hamster may well have upset him.  He could also have an infection and you should take him to the vet and get him checked out before you do anything else.

I have had this problem and it requires patience and understanding to get to the bottom of the problem (after you have been to the vet).  Shouting and locking him in   is not the answer.  That just makes them feel more isolated and upset.

Thank you for loving your cat and caring about him.

  6. My cat had suddenly started urinating in terrible places. For instance: The stove burner! god I didn't notice until I turned on the stove, that smell I will never forget.

It had gotten so bad I contacted a cat rescue and asked for advice on how to correct it.

They suggested to put him in a crate with his litter box and retrain him.

Since he didn't have the option of peeing anywhere but the litter box, it helped to reinforce where he should go.

It was really hard to keep him penned up like that, but it was really worth it. He was still able to come out and play, but only when I was able to watch him like a hawk to be sure he wouldn't sneak off and pee somewhere.

I recommend this method, It worked for me.

  7. Everytime the cat pees on the floor, use a load voice and tell him that it is wrong, put him in the little try everytime he does this, ir maybe take him outside and shout at him.

even though you think you are being cruel, you are helping prevent the problem of him peeing and he/she will soon no that it is wrong by what he is doing.

whenever he does his bussiness in the litter try or outside treat him with a snkack

    hope i helped April

  8. DONT listen to amzer putting bleach in your litterbox could kill your cat and it could also start a fire. Bleach and litter DO NOT MIX. I would suggest a urinary tract infection. cats dont pee on things because there mad. its trying to tell you theres something wrong. take your cat to the vet.

  9. Hi ! Try to put a few drops of bleach in its litter, cats love the smell and it stimulates them to pee (Sorry for spelling mistakes, I'm french)
