Question:

How can I stop being shy?

When I first meet some people I'll hide behind my boyfriend. I feel scared of them really but everyone says I'm shy. Even people who he knows well I'm scared to talk to or talk to. I'll get red in the face and just make up some reason to leave the conversation or I'll go to the bathroom and sneak off to my bedroom. I've thought of finding a career where talking to people is required but when I go to interviews they can still tell I'm shy even when I think I'm very confident. How can I stop this because it's sometimes embarrassing to meet someone who will be around me for a long time and then years later, they ask why acted that way.

  1. just tell your self that you are hot stuff and it will boost your self confidence! with good self confidence you wont have self conciousness which means you would be more outgoing which everyone likes! good luck i was like you too but in college ichanged my ways! i tryed not to be the shy guy and people see me as outgoing person now! good luck ! :)

  3. you cant stop. dont try to stop. God made you that way. he makes everybody unique. dont fight your instincts by taking prescription drugs. dont waste ur parents money on behavior therapy. calm your nerves and learn to talk to people. thats the best advice i can give u.

  4. I had the same issue.

    Okay, first off, if you think this may be a self confidence issue, then try doing something like getting a new look...it does a world of wonders for the ego. It always gives me a little confidence boost.

    Another tip, is when you are around someone, even if you don't know them, start up small talk, even if it is literally about the weather. This will help you break the ice with people. Even if you hate doing it, keep trying and don't give up. Then push yourself to introduce yourself to people when you are in a setting that requires you to meet people.

    I just started small talk with strangers and it helped me so much. While your in line, in the elevator, what ever it takes.  

  5. Wow!!  First you need to stop hiding behind your boyfriend.. Find something that you truely enjoy and/or excell in.  Spend some time creating it or becoming knowledgable in your interest, then you can feel confident in something that will make you feel good about yourself.  Stop thinking about how shy you are and see if you can find someone else who may need help with something.  This too can make you feel good about yourself and give you more confidence.  You are a beautiful creature as good as anyone else.  Good luck.

  6. I know exactly what you mean. I was just like you when I was little. I'd barely even talk to teachers! I'm an outgoing crazy person who loves to have fun deep down but only my family and close friends know this. To everyone else I'm just quiet  Ever since elementary school I was always shy...I was known as the "girl who never talked" lol. But once I got into the 8th grade, something about me changed. Suddenly I found myself saying hi to friends instead of waiting for them to say hi to me and making small talk with the people next to me. And it got even better in the 9th grade. Though I'm still considered quiet at times, I'm definitely not that "girl who never talks". But I've learned to show more of that true side of me and it will get better and better as you grow older. Also try to do activities such as drama and debate that help with speech and speaking out in front of others. You make new friends that way too! Hope this helps! =]

  9. Go somewhere where you are not known and practice. If you arn't known there is no need to be nervous (You will never see these peole again)  Meet people, talk to people, and just be who you want to be. Try this a few times and after you've gained some confidence try it at home.

Just go for it.  Keep going over it in your head and set your mind that you will not be shy.  once you open up a little to even 1 or 2 people you will realize how much easier it is.  especially if its your boyfriend and a couple of friends, they arent going to interegate you.  trust me meeting new people is a great thing.

  11. Well, dont worry many people are shy, but its something that needs to be overcomed, especially in the business world.  People like others who are outoging and can easily have a conversation. Put it this way, start off by just going to random places and try starting conversations with random people. Think of it like this, if you talkt o someone random you will most likely not see them again in your life so what do you have to lose. Its not like theyy are gonna get pissed because u cant talk. Just practice talking to people you dont know and you will eventually get better.

I used to be shy - check it out.  The reality is you are actually self-centred.  Yeah, WOW eh.  So, when you meet people stop thinking about what they think about you and start thinking about them, how to be friendly, kind, loving to them.  Find out what interests them, their opinion on stuff.  It's a revelation right?  It's not easy, takes time, but it makes all the difference.

  13. It sounds rather acute.In a case like yours I would suggest counselling and/or hypnotherapy. Or join something like the police,fire service ambulance or even the forces,you won't have time to be shy and a uniform and the training that goes with any of these will give you the confidence you need.
