Question:

How can I stop feeling bad about overtipping?

Recently my husband and I stayed at a hotel and walked to a nearby restaurant. While there we drank a lot, and I paid with my debit card.

Our waiter was good, nothing fantistic, but better than average.

When the bill came I did the math, figured 10% and doubled it. Then, in my alcohol induced state, doubled again. Leaving a 40% tip.

The waiter came up after and said thank you so much. Which I thought was weird. As we were leaving the math hit me.

I could use the $20 bucks, but I am sure the waiter could as well. Any suggestions on how I can let this go? Am I a complete idiot?

  1. you know that it is going to a good cause if he thanked you.

    he probably needed it.

think of it as good carma.

then somebody will do something good for you someday.

  2. Although I am sure you probaly did not really have it to spare, the waiter probably needed it more than you and was very thankful for it.. consider yourself being a blessing to him...Someone will be a blessing to you oneday...I am a firm believer that everything that happens is in divine order...You were meant to give him, that tip, that day,at that time..........

  3. THERE ARE TIP CARDS AVAILABLE, THE SIZE OF A CREDIT CARD WITH ALL THE INFO NEED TO LEAVE A PROPER TIP ..THEY ONLY COST 50 CENTS..

  4. Anytime I over tip I do not feel bad. These workers have to usually pay taxes and/or share tips w/ other waitresses or waiters.  When I was in a northern state recently the waitresses made only $3.00 an hour and the rest of their income was off their tips,  I couldn't believe it, in this day and age $3.00 an hour?  I wish I could remember exactly what state it was but as my husband is a truck driver, we have been in many different states and have seen many different  waitresses, but never felt so bad as for them..  Sorry I have CRS regarding what exact state but am sure glad its not all 48 states.  Now I never regret any large tip I may leave deserving or not......They have probably deserved it sometime or another anyhow!!!

  5. As a non-drinker, maybe you should check into an AA meeting.

Yes, you were stupid, but it was alcohol induced. I hope you didn't drive home.

It was pretty darn nice that he came and thanked you personally. Get over it. Maybe this will be a lesson learned for the next time you decide to get drunk.

See you at the next AA meeting.

  6. Just know that that $20 will come back to you some way.

Feel good knowing that you made someone happy.

Feel good knowing that you helped to compensate for some unknowing schlub who DIDN'T tip well (or at all.)

I know we're not all rich, but losing $20 just once is not that big a deal. Imagine losing $20 everyday.

  7. there is nothing wrong with over tipping if you can afford it. but if you can't then don't over do it. you have got to look at it like this the waiter if he is doing a good job will probably be tipped by lots of other customers on the other hand you don't have that luxury

  8. As the days of your life go by, you will continue to make mistakes, whether they be alcohol induced or not!  Mistakes are a great thing, IF YOU CAN LEARN FROM THEM!  The best way to get over something stupid you've  done is to learn from it and put the lesson into use in your daily life!

  9. Nothing wrong w/ overtipping. I would let it go because of the apprecation of the server. He came over and said thank you.  He didn't have to do that. So you know it went to someone that appreciated it! :)

  10. you've made what i would call a serendipitous mistake.  obviously, he was worthy of the tip because he made a point to thank you so graciously.  know that your $20 probably meant more to him than to you, so smile and let it go.  Remember, that everything you do will come back to you threefold, so someone someday will do something extremely nice for you!

  11. Leave him 10$ instead and look down and say I'm sorry but this is all I can tip you. Or maybe in 1978 I was a waitress and 30 cents was considered a good tip
