How can I stop feeling uncomfortable at the gym?

I'm a 15 year old boy, and my sister is 22. She likes to go the gym, but she doesn't like to go alone. She asked me one day to go with her, and I agreed. For some reason, the moment I stepped foot in the building I just felt uncomfortable. Everyone was older, and I felt like I was the only one who was 16 or younger. I'm going with my sister again today, and I really want to go since I want to lose fat and gain muscle before school starts, but I hate this uncomfortable feeling. Do you guys have any suggestions?

  1. Stick to your workout routine and don't think of it as a place to socialize. Act serious and you will be accepted by them after only a couple more visits.

  2. that's exactly how i felt. i am a 13 year old girl. but eventually i made some really nice Friends there.. yea they weren't my age but who cares! just go and do what u want to do. u aren't there to impress the ladies!

  3. Well i'm 16 and go to the gym, but I'm in my own zone... TRy bringing in an iPod, or MP3 player so you can concentrate on the music, and not anybody else. But really just be confident in yourself, because no one knows your age unless you tell them, and they probably aren't paying attention to you anyway...

  4. Everyone is free to go to the gym, so I think the discomfort is in your head. However, it wouldn't help to find someplace where you feel more comfortable. Does your high school weight room have any open hours? (I, personally, would have felt more comfortable without my classmates watching, but that's me.)

  5. hey man just relax, if they give u stares or something thats their problem. i had the same problem, then i just started ignoring the uncomfortable feeling and the people around me.

  6. The best advice is...people there at the gym dont care and shouldnt care how old you are, its a free country. You can do whatever you want...that isnt illegal! And I bet people there feel the same way as you do, so if you step up and start feeling comfortable in your own body, then I bet others will too
