Question:

How can I stop microsoft from asking me to update to XP service pack3?

1) The yellow shield keeps on saying [updates are ready for my PC]

2) It wants me to install XP service pack 3(running XP pack2 now)

3) But it took more than 7 days & still not finish installation. So I aborted it.

4) Now it keeps asking me to install it (even after I deleted the downloaded pack3 folder).

5) How can I make the yellow shield go away?

  1. You really need to complete that installation especially since it was started and it seemed to you that the job was not finished.

Now you need to go directly to the update site and search for the SP3. then download it and then install it. Keep installing it until it stops asking you to install it. You must restart your computer after it is installed. NOTE here that sometimes when it is complete a screen stays up saying 100 percent complete, and that screen has been known to stay there for weeks or months if you don't turn off the computer and turn it back on again.

    Good luck

PS... Do not go into the add/remove programs and remove it. It will cause you more problems than you can immagine.  Just finish the installation and all will be well. keep at it until you are not asked to install it anymore.

    Again, Good Luck?

  2. You could try installing it with the single file download. That avoids any autoupdate issues. Hopefully after that your Windows will know it has it and stop trying to do it.

    It's 316MB!

  3. You could try download it with the single file . That avoids any autoupdate issues.

    Hope can help you

  4. You should update to service pack 3 for security reasons.

  5. disable automatic updates by right clickin on mycomputer

and in computer management ~> disable autoupdates

    and BITS under services !!!

    :)

  6. If you are having problems with Sp3 on Windows XP Pro, you are eligible for a free support call relating to the install by calling 1800-936-4900

    Or: You can Block it

  7. You can try going to the windows update website ( www.windowsupdate.com ). Go into a custom update and when it displays all of the available updates check the box under Service Pack 3 that says Hide This Update. I'm not sure if this will carry over to automatic updates but it is worth a try.

Another option is to visit the actual link ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai... ) to download Service Pack 3 in a file for offline installation. Maybe this will speed things up.

The final option is to disable automatic updates all together, but I strongly suggest that you don't do that.
