How can I stop my hamsters from fighting? :(?

We got my son his first pet. Its a female teddybear hamster. After having her for a few months we decided that she may be lonely since she was used to having a few friends in the cage when she was in the pet store. We got another hamster for her. The new hamster is slightly younger than her, smaller, and almost identical in appearance. They are total opposites. The first hamster is relaxed, friendly, and calm. The second one we just added is very wired, energetic and all over the place. As of recently they have started fighting and beleive it or not the smaller one is the instigator all the time. The original hamster only retaliates when neccesarry. At this point the smaller one bit Miffy(the big one) so bad, she has a huge scab on her belly and on her sides and she is limping. The smaller hamster practically has no damage just a really small scab and its almost healed already. We have put a divider in the cage as a temporary solution but we just want them to get along. Any ideas?

    Evil

  2. As Flute said, Syrians are very solitary. It's not likely that you'll ever get them to get along, because that breed is VERY territorial and does not do well with others. The best thing to do is split them up permanently. The pet store should have told you that. Unfortunately, some people there don't know nearly enough. They do alright together as babies, but once they mature they WILL fight, and may end up killing one another.

  3. in the pet stores they were babies...naturallly when hamsters grow up the like to live alone...the only hamsters that fight but not kill each other when living together arae drawf hamsters. so tagline: separate them or they'll kill each other

  4. Well first get some cardboard cut two peices that can make a corner in the cage put the hyper one in it everyday whenever possible and teach him to calm down. It worked on my hamsters hope this helped

  5. Firstly, I think the second hamster might be on drugs. That kind of attitude suggests he has taken something. Or perhaps, he has ADHD. Take him to the Doctor.

I think you should have a chat with each hamster individually and ask how they are both feeling. I think the smaller hamster needs to sit on the thinking chair until he realises the impact of his actions on others. He needs to learn that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and will NOT be tolerated.

The small hamster has probably got 'small hamster syndrome' - it's untreatable!

  6. Please research animals before getting one. Syrian hamsters (golden, teddybear, panda bear etc.) are SOLITARY animals. They cannot live together. They can and will fight, and it often ends up with one dying. Please seperate them asap, into different cages.

  7. Teddy bear hamsters are just one colour variety of the species the Syrian hamster.

Syrians are a totally solitary species and highly territorial - they do not need, want or even like the company of other hamsters. As they reach maturity they WILL fight, until at least one ends up dead.

The hamsters you see in pet stores are juveniles. After weaning Syrian hamsters will live peacefully together for a few weeks at most. However, as they get older and reach sexual maturity the fighting will start - as you have discovered. They will never learn to get along, but sadly fight to the death.

Please separate these hamsters as soon as possible. They need to be housed in separate cages and never allowed any contact (every time you put them together they will fight, and risk serious even fatal injury).

    Hope this helps.

  10. Teddy bear hamsters are a fancy name for syrian hamsters. Syrian hamsters are very solitary and should only be kept one to a cage. I wonder who told you that the two can be put together. You must have done some background research before making the decision.

Please separate them IMMEDIATELY. They cannot stick together and you are lucky that both of them are still alive. However, if you risk continuing putting them together in the same cage, they will definitely have a vicious fight one day (rather night, since they are active only at night) and you will see a viciously killed hamster in the cage one morning when you wake up.

  11. duct tape their heads...that should keep them occupied...for a little while at least...
