I know about 'submissive peeing' but this pup is peeing all over the place when I go to take her out in the middle of the night to help toilet train her! I don't tell her off and I'm trying to be understanding, but she's making the house (and herself) smell! I've never had this with a pup before.

  1. She may need to go out sooner than you think. Try that and remember

she will outgrow this behavior. But I really think she can't wait to get out.

  2. Submissive peeing...

it's a real problem...I will not make light of it...

Try the following...you may think it sounds cruel but it is not and it works...

    1) When arriving home, totally ignore the dog until you have put down the groceries or hung up you jacket, etc, etc...Do NOT msake a big deal out of leaving or arriving.... just pretend she is not there

    2) NEVER bend over the dog....bending over make them submit and pee. If you want to approach a dog with this issue, sit on the floor (down at her level) and then call her to you. Towering over her will only make her pee....If you had a "dominant dog", I would instruct you the exact opposite!!

    3) DO not make eye contact when you take her out to pee...peek to see if she has done her "biz"...eye contact can also be an invitation to submissiveness.

All this take times and a lot of self control....If these methods don't help, contat a professional trainer.

I am a dog groomer...I see a lot of this behavior...I keep notes so I know who is likely to do this and I apprach them differently that I would a dog that is not as submissive. Usually, I can avoid having the dog pee in my grooming shop (though not always - I AM NOT GOD!!! LOL)

    Good luck

  3. ask a vet or make sure she uses the bathroom when you take her out and dont let her come back in untill she does.

  4. first submissive peeing doesnt stop until the animal is able 2 comepletely control itself, which isnt unitl the ages of 4-7 months. and since this is something ur dog cannot control there should b no discipline when that situation happens. but another thing u should try is having the puppy test 4 a uti-urinary tract infection. make sure the dog doesnt have any health related issues first. a uti will make the dog have 2 urinate more often & it cannot control it. if the test comes back negative then ur just gonna have 2 wait it out. it will pass. it is very common in cocker spaniels especially, and chihuahuas, yorkies, maltese, all of the tiny dogs. working in a pet store that sells dogs, ive been peed on by more cocker spaniels & chis from just taking them out of their enclosure 4 a customer.

  5. first, don't look at her in the eye, or touch her.  These are triggers that start the submissive peeing.  Ask your guests to not look at her or interact with her.  Just call her outside on her regular times, without touching her.  This is not a need to pee, it is a behavior issue and given time, patience, no scolding...lots of positive praise, she will outgrow it and it will become a forgotten issue.
