Question:

How can I stop my "Yankee Candle" from giving off black smoke?

I have one of those scented "Yankee Candle" style candles in the glass jar. It keeps giving off black smoke, which is in turn leaving a black spot on the ceiling above. I have heard about trimming the wick and so forth but this doesn't seem to have helped. Any tips on proper candle burning that can stop this and help me get the most out of my candle?

  1. everytime you burn it - it builds up a black char ball at the end of the wick - every time you relite it - you should cut that char ball down to 1/4 inch and then light the wick - otherwise - you'll continue to bet a black smoke stream.

Also, set a lid over it when extinguishing.

I prefer the warmer cuz you don't get any scent other than the candle and it scents the room better.

  2. cut the wick shorter. the long wick is what gives off the black smoke, you can also get one of those candle lampshades (they're ceramic) you can get them at the yankee candle store at the mall or anywhere that has like nick nacks for your home.

edit: or you could get a candle warmer so you don't have to light it at all.

  3. Trimming the wick is really the only thing you can do...

Aside from not burning it at all :)

  5. Keep your wick at 1/8in-1/4in. Keeping your candle out of areas with fans on or with drafts also helps. Yankee Candle sells Illumalids  http://www.yankeecandle.com/cgi-bin/ycbv... they sit on the top of the jar while your candle burns and they reduce the soot and smoke--they also help so that you don't get the wax build-up on the sides of the jar. I have one and it works great!

Yankee Candle has a new line of soy candles that burn cleaner than regular wax candles. http://www.yankeecandle.com/cgi-bin/ycbv...

btw, Yankee Candle does not recommend using warmers with their candles, the glass wasn't made for that purpose and isn't thick enough--it could shatter.

  6. Candles made from paraffin wax often give off a lot of black soot because paraffin is a petroleum product (yep - it comes from crude oil).

If you want candles that burn cleanly without the black soot, try vegetable wax candles instead.  There are many good vegetable wax candle brands, but my favorite is Mia Bella's.  If you'd like more information visit:
