  1. ok during when you get the impressions.

and they are doing the top (because that is worse than the bottom)

look down and breath through your nose.

    it really helps!

  2. You will probably gag when the impressions are taken. Keep breathing through your nose, and it will be over before you know it.

As for the rest, the orthodontist will be aware of the gagging and will help you through each appointment.

    Good luck !

  3. Ask if they can put salt on your tongue before the impressions. This confuses the gag reflex and stimulates other nerves. Try to remain calm...breathe deeply and slowly through your nose, wiggle your toes, lean as far forward as possible, or even sit on the side of the chair while the impression is in your mouth.Hum, if that helps. Above all -remain calm! Getting worked up will only make it worse. I know it seems that you are choking, but you are not. The impression materials set pretty quickly and if the assistant uses warmer water, it will set even faster. Try to cooperate as much as you can and please, don't pull the assistant's hands out of your mouth before the impression material is set. Cleaning up partially set impression material is a big mess, for you and for her. Remember,if the impression does not come out the first time, they will repeat it until they get it right.

A gag reflex is an automatic response and you can try to control it somewhat, but, sometimes, it is just how your body responds. Don't worry, most assistants know how to handle patients who gag and they know what to do or what not to do. Good luck!
