Question:

How can I stop our cat from peeing on clothes and bath rugs!?

My boyfriend's cat pees on any article of clothing left on the floor. He also pees on the bathmat if it's left on the bathroom floor. We keep a pretty clean house, but if anything falls on the floor, you can bet he's peed on it within the hour. He has a litter box, and he uses it, but I don't understand the obsession with peeing on things that are left the floor too.

Any suggestions for correcting this, or at least an understanding of why would be helpful. Thank you.

  1. He might be suffering from an urinary track infection or kidney problems. This is the only way a pet can communicate that there is a problem. The cat should be seen by a Vet.

  2. Make sure the cat doesnt have any medical problems first - such as urinary tract infection, kidney problems, etc.  So call your vet and make an appointment!

  3. First off, I would rule out any medical problems with a visit to the vet. A lot of cats have urinary issues. I had the same problem with my cat once, and it turned out she had crystals in her urine. We have the problem under control now. :)

If that's not the issue, it might be behavioral. PetCo and PetSmart sell something called Comfort Zone, which is a plugin that is supposed to help the cat relax. I've known the product to help with a lot of out-of-the-box peeing, but your milage may vary. :)
