Question:

How can I stop the grass around my palm trees from dying?

I have 4 palm trees in my garden in one area and have recently had new turf laid as part of a landscaping job on the garden. However, there is a patch approx 1m in diameter from the base of the trees that has gone bone dry and dying. I guess it's due to the shallow root structure of the palms but I wondered if there is anything I can do that will help the turf to come back to life or, if I re-lay turfs around this area, what will ensure it "takes" properly and does not end up dying. The palms make a great feature to the garden so removing them is not an option. Thanks.

  1. It doesn't matter what you do to the turf, or how many times you re-lay it; all the nutrients are being taken up by the palm trees and that's why the grass is dying. This happens in my garden too.

I don't think there's much you can do, apart from not have grass around them - would you be happy to spread mulch/bark/sand instead?

  2. don't let dogs pee on them

  3. Lift the turf and dig in plenty of mulch. Relay turf.
