We need to strengthen the floor under our washing machine and surrounding area. We have crawl space access underneath. What is the best method. Can a general handyman do this, or do I need some kind of specialist? Thanks. Irene

  1. remove and replace, yes a handy man or contractor. dont use 2x4s for floor joists.most older houses have a min 2x8 joists

  2. get some 2X4 lumber and cut to fit the existing bracing under the floor.  If this is an old house, the bracing to the ground may just be bricks, blocks, or rocks.  Check that out and re-brace using blocks or bricks.  When you get to the sub-floor, use treated lumber to wedge in and get a tight fit.

  3. Hi Irene

You do not mention if it is a wooden floor. There are a lot of options. One is to through a conrete slab where your washing machine will be standing.
