Question:

How can I style my 17 month old daughters hair?

My daughter is 17 months old and was born with a head full of hair. At 7 months I started to put pony tails (with soft scrunchies) through out her hair, then recently ( 2 months), I started to braid her hair with beads on the ends to promote growth, but one of her braids on her ends fell out (by her ear) yesterday and as I am taking her hair out I see more hair than usual being shed and I am extremely concerned! Her hair is short, but just long enough to braid down, very soft, curly and very thin. I have tried plaits, but they come loose, and pony tails look awkward because the hair is short and her head doesn't look right with them in. I have looked for children salons, but they don't specialize in African American hair. I have no idea what to do. Please help me out! Any products, children salons, websites or suggestions that you may have will help me! Thanks in advance and God bless!

  1. I hope you realize that your baby is only 17 months old. You aren't supposed to style their hair until they are a least 1-3 years old.  Their hair is too thin and delicate to be styled. That is why her hair is falling out. Just leave her hair be until she is older

  2. Just for Me is a hair care line made for African American kids.  You may want to try this out on her hair.  The products that you are currently using may be too stong for her hair.

  3. Dont forget that when you braid the hair, hair that is naturally shed cant come loose so stays put until the braids are taken out so it might be that no more is being shed than usual but that because it isnt naturally being blown away it looks like more has come out all at once. Hope that made sense. It happened to me when I had my braids in, I thought I would be bald when I was taking them out so much hair was falling out but actually I had the same amount of hair as usual.

There is an amzing childrens hair salon in london, it is just for children and has chairs that are little toy cars, rockets, fairy castles etc for the children to sit in and all the hair dressers are trained n childcare as well as hair. It has a separate area for the adults to sit and wait in and an area for older kids to wait and play on playstations etc. It is in harrods although not sure of the name.

    Hope this helps

Ps simply me is right you shouldnt really be styling it yet anyway, wait a few years till her hair is less delicate

  4. I would just put an oil based lotion in her hair and comb through it with a comb. Her hair is probally beautiful the way that it is naturally. If you really want to put it up, try putting the oil based lotion in it and do pig tails with soft small scrunchies. I have a cousin that is half african american and she had wild hair, but we would always do this to her hair and it would look really wonderful. The stuff they used was in a pink bottle, and i think it might have been called "pink". They also sell several kinds of gels and lotions at wal-mart for this hair type... Another thing to try, that i myself use.. is Garnier Fructise... they sell this shine serum that works wonders on my puffy and frizzy hair. I am not african american, but i honestly think this stuff is thick enough that it would work on your daughters hair type as well. It's in the sleek and shine section of the products. Hope i helped.
