  1. He must live in the US for 5 yrs and then apply for citizenship just as you did. There is not automatic citizenship anymore just by being married to one. That is an old rule and it only applied for those who were native born in the USA>

nick is inccorect. please call the us federal operator at 1 800 fed info and get the us immgration number. they can tell you when your  husband can apply for citizenship. i was born in the usa. no expection unless your are military.

my was came as a refugee we met when he was in the us for 3 yrs. he had to wait the full five years, irregardless of being married to me. we got married and even then he had to wait for the five years.

  2. Once you *are* a citizen, i.e. once you have taken the oath ceremony and you have your naturalization certificate in hand, then you can either make an INFOpass appointment or simply call the USCIS and update your petition.

It usually takes around 60 days for this information to be relayed, processed, updated and for the information to be reflect case and shortly there-after, a your petition will be approved and a visa number will become current for your husband.

  3. US law states that after holding Permanent Residence status (a Green Card) for 5 years (3 years if married to a US citizen or 4 years if you are a refugee) you may apply for US citizenship. This requires an oath pledging allegiance to the US and a promise to uphold your requirements and rights as a citizen. After this process has been completed and the Citizenship Certificate has been given to you, you are legally a US citizen, but this may not turn up on the sysytem for a few weeks.

Since you will soon legally be a citizen, you can petition your husband again, but this time under the citizen bracket. This means that he will be given priority over the vast majority of others but this process will still take some time.
