I have a litle girl and I'm home trying to open my own business, but I would also love to take a GCSE in English so that later I may take another course to teach english to foreigns. I'm on benefits so I dont really have much money and being a single mum isnt that easy.

  1. depending on what qualifications u already have u may be able to go to college and study (for nearly free i paid £35) and if u get ur name on early enough they can sometimes fund childcare too.

  2. The Directgov website has a lot of information on its "Learning for Free" page.  Go to http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAnd...

There are links to follow for GCSEs, studying on benefits etc.  I haven't followed all the links as there are so many of them.  But I think you will find the information you need on one of them.  Good luck.

  3. Hmm, I don't think you can. Usually the only way one can do a GCSE for free is to study at a government (state) school. All the distance education providers I know of in the UK are private schools and therefore you'd have to pay fees.

Methinks your only options are to:

    i) study at home but have to pay (approx £600) to a company such as Oxford Homeschooling in order to do so; or

ii) study for free (or minimal cost) at a local college of further education.

If it's the need for childcare that is drawing you towards studying at home then check out the facilities at your local college before dismissing it as an option -- many colleges now have a creche/arrangements with a local nursery etc.

  4. normally you HAVE to pay for those exams. well its not cheap but not tooo expensive :/ good luck
