I currently do corporate accounting and HATE IT!! Its extremely boring. I really want to teach high school math, and I know there is an Alternate Route plan, but I don't know if I am eligible. I have a bachelors degree in accounting from an accredited university, but its not liberal arts. Will I have to go for another Undergrad degree? Can I get a masters in education if that isnt what my undergrad is in? Or can I simply do the alternate route plan? I've tried to contact the NJDOE, but they never get back to me.

  1. Hi.  To teach high school math in NJ you need 30 college math credits (in a unified sequence, whatever that means), you need to pass the high school math Praxis exam given by ETS, and you need to have either a traditional secondary education minor or you need to go through alternative licensure.

To teach middle school math, you need 15 college math credits, pass the middle school math Praxis, etc.

The alternative licensure can lead to a master's in education, regardless of your undergraduate major.
