Question:

How can I teach my child to be a little more patient?

my 4 year old gives up right away (or comes unglued) if she cannot get something done her way, I usually just let her blow off her steam and try to deal with it herself and I'll explain to her that it takes practise and not to give up. Do you have any other effective suggestions to help her keep her cool and see things through to the end instead of giving up so easily?

  1. Yes give her little rewards if she finshs what she

    starts. =]

  2. I can answer that one! My daughter was one that I had to learn such tecniques. I tend to be excitable and bring out the enthusiasm in people and animals, which is good sometimes, but not good when you need to calm people down.

    I learned with my daughter to alter my whole approach. I would walk slowly, talk very softly, I would touch her more gently and stroke her hair more slowly. I made all my actions and words calm and deliberate and slow when she was frustrated. This seemed to help calm her down.

    For example if she just blew her top because something didn't go right, I would get up slowly and walk over to her slowly. I would quietly say "I see that did not go like you wanted it too" and I slowly rubbed her arm. This uses alot of her sense. Hearing me. Feeling me. Smelling me when I come close. Seeing me move slowly. This deliberate type of action changes her environment to where she is the only upset thing and she is out of place with the upset. She will calm down  and we will work on it together. I talk her through it  by saying things like "Oh no, it fell again, let's make another tower with a bigger bottom and see if that changes it" (slowly and softly. And I would help her to the end of her projects to help build her tolarance, all in slow motion.

  3. Show her patience yourself in how you react to her.
