you don't have to teach that.  that comes standard with kids.  It's teaching them not to be afraid that's hard.

I'd say that you should grab their foot and let go when they have just gone to the toilet in the middle of the night.

but if you mean the opposite you should give them a torch and say monsters are afraid of light, so if they are afraid in the middle of the night.

That's easy, go out and find a monster for them to be afraid of.  put it in the child's closet. Closet monsters survive on 2 main staple diets as everyone knows...children's bare toes and the left over socks that the dryer doesn't eat.

And while you are looking, if you see an old dude in a red suit, tell him i like "Italian, red, 2 doors and 12 cylinders, and the word ENZO".

Children are very impressionable...get a friend in a mask to hide in a closet at bedtime and jump out and scream at your kids, I'll guarantee they will be well afraid of monsters afterwards.
