Question:

How can I teach my kitten to play independently?

I know this sounds like a silly question - and my 4 month old kitten plays fine when I'm in the location either with me or around me. Basically he's always either on me giving me love or sleeping or playing with me.

But, as soon as he's in another room and I leave him toys he just looks at them and then I see his wee shadow outside the door of my room. I work from home a lot and need peace to work.... sometimes!

I leave so much for him to explore and play with - then as soon as I open the door he'll either ignore me, play with me or just go off and play independently with a toy in the room I'm in. Sometimes he can do this for about 5 mins on end!

I guess my wee friend just wants to be around me, which is lovely. But I can't be around all the time. My flat is teeny and I can't have two cats (kittens, maybe, but there's just no room for 2 full grown cats so it's a no-no).

It's not a major prob - love him too much and probably have spoiled him. For his own good I think he does need to become gradually more independent. Will that happen anyway in time? Any thoughts?

  1. aww it is so sweet!

I think he will naturally become more independant as he gets older, and if he is allowed out to play and such...i have had kittens like that but they do change...

i think as you live in such close quarters he is used to seeing you all the time...how is he when you leave? do you think he cries? or will he 'get on with it' when you aren't around?

    oh bless him...
