Question:

How can I teach my mother manners?

She's a 72 year old woman, that will not stop talking with her mouth full. I constantly yell at her about it, and refuse to participate in conversations, sometimes, I say in a loud sarcastic voice "I can't understand waht your saying?! I think there's food in your mouth!". It may seem rediculous, but I was raised to not talk with food in my mouth, by my aunt, and now, when I'm around my mother, she's ALWAYS doing this horendous act around me. I understand, if I didn't repremand or if it was just causual or sometimes., But she will do this every day, and often. And I'M ALAWAYS yelling at her immediately, and it doesn't work she's just dense. I've called her everything from a CUD CHEWING COW, to a BARBARIAN. She tried to lie about it too. But I can hear the muffled sound of food stored in her cheeks!

Disgusted,

Please help.

  1. Well, Swampy, what you are doing is called Elder Abuse. Your mother, at 72, is not going to change, and calling her filthy names is abusive. Are you still living at home? If so, MOVE OUT. You are NOT a good caretaker. I sincerely hope you are not hitting her. If so, I hope someone finds out soon and hauls your a** to jail.

  2. .......old ppl are hard to change for some reason

  3. Yelling and name calling is matching rudeness with rudeness, and clearly neither are getting anywhere.  You say you were raised to not do this yourself.  Is it possible she is suffering from an age related mental issue that's causing  her to lose her awareness of certain things?

  4. I think your mother is not the problem with this issue at all. You have to be very patient, caring, and loving to her no matter what.

She's the one who brought you in this world. Be thankful to her rather.

    Hope this answers.

  5. She's not going to change, live with it.  Sit far enough away so the food doesn't hit you or get in your plate.

  6. The thing is, she's 72. It's likely that with age, her judgement of what is appropriate in normal day-to-day things in eroded away.

You don't have to eat with her, you know.

I think you are just looking for an excuse to bully your mother. Now that you can, that is.

  7. she's 72 years old, let her eat and talk how ever she wants to..

you also do NOT have to eat with her, so then you do not have to see her talk with her mouth full.

  8. Every time she speaks to you when her mouth is full of food, just stare at her with a bewildered look on your face. Sooner or later she'll ask what is wrong? did you hear her? etc.....

At that point say, "I'm sorry I don't know what you just said. I was distracted by the masticated cow (or chicken or turkey) rolling around in your mouth."

  9. I too am disgusted. Not at your mother but at you!

You are the one who lacks manners. Imagine calling your mother names!

    "CUD CHEWING COW, A BARBARIAN."

Your mum being 72 - you will not be a teenager! Show love and respect to your mum even though she did not bring you up.

I'm glad my children do not call me names in spite of my failings.

  10. Give her a manners book

  11. sometimes it is so unfortunate they have censorship to answers here, otherwise I could tell you where you came from, and where to go.

  12. I would definitely be taking my meals in another room until she stopped this disgusting habit.

If that didn't work then find something you can do which will irritate her as much as her habit does to you.

You then have a 'quid pro quo' situation. i.e you stop when she does.

  13. Your mother is far too set in her ways to change such an ingrained habit.  Unless you are dining with company that is not familiar with mom's bad habit, than learn to cope with it.  The alternative is to beat your head against the wall while you slowly construct a viscious hatred of your mother.  It isn't worth it.  If necessary, take your meals to another room and say nothing.  By all means, don't continue to call your mom cruel and hurtful names.

    Good luck
