I just bought two pet budgies, both 2-3 months old. Any tips on how to teach them to speak simple words and phrases?

  1. Like with all birds who talk they will pick up on the words they hear all the time on a daily basis. Your job is to listen to see if you can even understand what a parakeet says because parakeets out of all the parrot breeds are the most difficult to understand in the first place sense their voices are the tiniest. And for the most part 2 parakeets kept together in the same home are likely not to ever talk human words.

  2. I've only had two budgies, but both of them talked.

I got them one at a time though. With budgies, this is way better, because instead of focusing on one another, they're focusing on you. You should sell one, or cage it in a different room.

Whenever you take them out, just talk to them. Say "pretty bird," "hello," "[yourname]," etc.

And yes, there is hope. :] My first parakeet was amazing. We used to let him fly around in the backyard after he learned to come on command. He knew several different kinds of whistles, and his vocabulary consisted of, "prettybird," "Amanda," "My Sandwich!," "hi!," and various noises he'd made up or heard.

  3. sorry most likely no but african greys and others can learn hundreds of words

  4. 5. In my experience, i have ha a lot of trouble trying to teach a female budgie to talk. However, my male budge says many amusing phrases, will sing to the Eastenders theme tune, barks like the dog and sings the doorbell and phone to us.

Because you have two budgies, there is little chance that they will talk. It's usually only the budgies who are kept on their own that are spoken to regularly that will talk.

Try speaking to them, and repeating phrases to them, but I'm afraid it will be unlikely they will talk is they have each other.

  6. If they're males more likely 'yes' (blue bill at the top of their beak indicates males, females brown)

I've had many budgies in the past and for the males we've had, they started learning to talk and doing wolf whistles and other types of whistles.

What you need to do is say certain words and phrases over and over and over and they'll pick it up.

My birds have all picked up "Here puppy, puppy, puppy", because we always say that to call our dogs from outside.

every morning when you get up and walk into the room, say "good-morning" and every night before going to bed say "good-night" and the same when coming home "hello" and leaving "good-bye"

They'll probably practice the words when you're NOT around or in a different room, my birds have always done that.

Then to see if they know the words or not, just keep repeating the words over and over, and also, birds like to pick up on higher pitch voices, so say stuff in more of a high pitch squeaky voice, i know sounds weird, but true. But you gotta think about whistling thats higher pitch, and they can pick up on that too.

Do different melodic whistling if you can, start off simple, and have your birds learn though, and then sooner they'll be able to whistle a bunch more.

i know this was a lot, but it always helps : )

  7. repition say it over and over again dont give up

  8. Male budgies acutally have more vocal and voice then the females do . You can only teach a budgie simple words like hi or bye. other birds like MCcaws or african greys can learn way more words but the bigger birds are hard to take care of.

Well if you want your budgies to talk just keep repeating the word.Over and over again.

    Well good luck!

  9. It is very unlikely your birds will learn to talk! Parakeets are talkers but not in pairs, they would much rather talk to each other then pay attention to you. If you want to try, say the phrase for 5 minutes a day to the birds (seperatly) 1 bird normally learns a phrase in about a month, but I am not so sure about birds in pairs

  10. keep repeating the same word over and over again and talk to him alot so that he gets to know you

  11. I had one when I was growing up. Consistency, as with most things, is the key. She said "pretty bird" (original, I know) but we always said that and she eventually started saying that. My Dad's cockatoo says "whatcha doin'?"
