Question:

How can I teach my toddler how to chew?

I got him used to mashed foods so now my son automatically swallows his food. I keep telling him and showing him how to chew and he just isn't doing it. What he does is swallows it and then chews. I thought chewing was something that he should do naturally and shouldn't be taught.

  1. Try to give him some biscuits.

  2. Most kids do chew naturally, but not all kids. At the daycare I worked at we had a child who didnt know how and would choke everyday he ate. His parents had the same problem and the childs doctor told them to massage the outside of jaw, and it worked! Good luck

  3. My daughter is 19 months and chews hers food - she has not been taught

Im not sure how old your son is but maybe he just hasnt learnt yet which isnt a problem untill hes about my daughters age then will be on more solids.

If you are worried talk to health visitors or maybe even your doctor - i dont think we have ever had a problem with our daughter and food some children learn quicker than others your son may just be taking his time to learn - keep showing him and he may suprise you one day!

    Good luck Donna -x-
