You'll need to pick up basic crochet skills and then you can take off.  You can get lots of basic crochet instruction on the net, or just go to your local library.  Play around a little, and learn how patterns are written, and then you can start.

You can also check around to see if there are informal crochet or knitting groups that meet at local libraries, coffee shops, or homes; people there will be happy to help you and may even already  have materials or patterns they can lend or give you.
