I live in a condo and for some reason they want to know how many gallons every units toilet holds and if we have any leaking faucets. Why would they want us to do this...are they going t make us buy a new toilet or what?

My questions is how do we know? Our toilet doesn't say anything on it. What are they likely to make us do?

  1. turn off the water at the faucet first, then flush the bowl out, o..k. block it off with a piece of cloth attached to a piece of string, then pour a measured volume of water into the bowl to find out the bowls volume. Then remove the cloth by pulling on the string and the excess water will escape and find it's original level. Turn the faucet back on and it's done!

  2. the capacity is usually stamped on the inside of the tank, or underside of the tank lid. if not, just turn off the water supply valve, flush it, fill it up using gal. milk containers up to the fill line. New EPA requirements are 1.6gal. for water conservation.

    Hope that helps.

  3. They are trying to conserve water. Older toilets held and used 5-6 gallons of water for each flush. New toilets us only 1.6 gallons per flush. If you have a new toilet it will have the capacity stamped  just at the back of and under the seat on the bowl. If your toilet is ten plus years old it is likely to be the large capacity one. I don't think they can make you buy new toilets, but the association may be looking to replace them as an upgrade so they need to know how many of them are in the complex. They are concerned about leaky faucets and running toilets because even a slight drip can waste many gallons of water per day, multiplied by the number of units in the complex could be costing them (and you through condo fees) thousands and thousands of dollars that would easily pay for the upgrades.

  4. measure the capacity in tank up to the waterline .divide by 7.5 i think water is 7.5 gal./ cubic foot.

  5. They are trying to conserve water. To find out the capacity of your toilet, look underneath, locate and shut the water supply valve, flush the toilet. Remove the cover to the toilet tank, now fill the tank to the normal level with a container, such as a measuring cup, a quart jar, or gallon jug. Now, calculate how much it took to bring it to the normal level. Now turn the supply back on.
