I just got a used Nissan 5 H.P outboard with a jon boat I bought and there isnt a marking on it,I have no idea what year model it is but if I had to guess I would say late 1998-2002.. It has an oil dipstick and drain plug but I dont know if it needs gas and oil mixture? Also how do I find out what year it is so I can get parts for it?How can I tell if it is a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

  1. If it has a dipstick then it is a 4 stroke...no need to mix oil with the gas.

If you need parts just take it to an outboard repair place...they should be able to get you whatever you need,

  2. It is definitely a 4 stroke.  2 strokes do not have dipsticks or oil drain plugs.  It uses straight gasoline no oil mixture.  To find out the year, get the serial number from the plate under the powerhead and contact Nissan directly at the following link.  They are very helpful and will respond to your requests.

  3. Look in the phone directory for a Nissan OB dealer -- your questions will be answered.

    V

  4. Kind of strange for a 5 HP motor to be a 4 stroke, but I guess it's possible. If it has a crankcase oil reservoir and a dipstick it's probably a four stroke, but if it has an oil tank and dipstick it may be a two stroke with oil injection. In either case you don't need to mix the gas, but you do need to find out which it is for sure.

  5. All the answers are good because 2 strokes get their lubricating oil from the fuel mixture and don't require a sump.  How-sum-ever.... some Japanese two-strokes have an oil 'reservoir' for automatic metering of the fuel oil mixture. (mostly for motorcycles)

So if the dipstick is a reservoir, it would be mounted externally, probably with a small line leading to the intake manifold, it's a 2 stroke.

Now.... having said all that.... Nissan does make a 4 stroke 5 HP (clever fellows), why don't you provide as much information as possible to them at, http://www.onlineoutboards.com/5hp_nissa... and see what they say about your motor.

    Good Luck!!!
