I have a pattern that calls for a fabric with 50 percent stretch. How do I choose a fabric like this at the store? Thanks!

  1. read the tag or ask an associate for help

  2. This is easier to show than to write about!  Fold the fabric sideways, in the selvage to selvage direction.  Measure a six inch piece of this fold and take hold of it at each end of the six inch span.  See if you can easily stretch that six inches so that it measures nine inches.  That would be 50 percent stretch.  Sometimes pattern envelopes have a little measuring tool right on the back for you to use in the store.  If the fabric doesn't stretch this far easily, do not use it for that pattern, as it won't fit correctly.

  3. Use a ruler (or the guide on the pattern envelope if there is one)

Place one end of the material at the 4 inch mark with your right hand. Smooth it out with your left hand and then pinch tight on the zero mark with your left thumb, so the material can't move from that spot. Keep it pinned there with your thumb.

You're holding 4 inches and 50% of 4 is 2, so with your right hand, stretch the material and see if the stretch will reach an additional 2 inches, to the 6 inch mark. If it does, it has 50% stretch.
