How can I tell if a yahoo member is on line if they are not in my messenger list?

if the yellow icon glows it means the user is available , however if the user has selected Invsible mode thn  de prsn will remain offline to de vuver although  wen  he1s online.

check in your mail ... it would glow,... for that you need one of his mail sent to you or forwarded to you ...

If they have a 360, they may have the smiley  turned on under their profile pic or if they are on answers you can check in their profile here and see if they have it enabled there. ummm, you could invite them, just type their name in the bar in your messenger list. I'm sure there are other ways but it's early and I'm half asleep...oh yeah, almost forgot, they could have placed messenger buttons on other non-yahoo sites to let people know if they're on Yahoo messenger or not. before 360 was even released. I've also seen them on myspace.

bookmark their profile... and check it once in awhile

if he's in your address book, then the smiley icon glows when he's online. you'll know even if he's not in your YM list.
