How can I tell if my Kitchen Cabinets have polyurethane?

This may seem like a silly question, but I was interested in refinishing my Kitchen Cabinets. I realize that if they are covered in polyurethane, I will have to sand first, and if not, I could just use a refinisher. So I was wondering, how can you tell if a cabinet has been covered in polyurethane?

  1. if they are real wood...they will most likely be shiny

try to scratch it and see if it will chip off or peel

i would sand lightly just to be safe either way
